Langkloof Honeybush Company
Sustainable harvesting and regenerative cultivation of honeybush
The Langkloof Honeybush Company (LKHBCo) is situated along the R62, a scenic route in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Honeybush is the common name for the Cyclopia genus, endemic to the Cape Floristic Region, a small area at the tip of Africa with the highest diversity of plant species on earth.
Honeybush is a perennial plants that plays an important role in this ecosystem, not only within the lives of local communities where it is embedded in tradition, but also in maintaining the delicate biome serving a crucial water catchment area.
Traditionally, wild stocks could be harvested sustainably. A combination of worsening drought, rapid invasion of alien species, coupled with overharvesting and poaching, has put pressure on the wild populations; pushing some species to the brink of extinction.
In 2018 the LKHBCo was established to promote the sustainable harvesting and regenerative cultivation of honeybush. The tea is processed in the area and sold onto local and international markets.
Honeybush is naturally caffeine-free. After a carefully controlled oxidation process, it has a sweet, floral, fruity and woody aroma. To celebrate the unique range of flavour profiles, we partnered with an expert blender to create our own signature blends.
Sharing the story of provenance and traceability with each vintage harvest is core to our sustainability and product ethos. We are excited to continue to grow the industry for this unique indigenous species that deserves the attention from tea-lovers all over the world!
