Alexander Kay, is a third generation tea farmer from Malawi. About 15 years ago he started reviving the orthodox tea production on Satemwa Tea Estates. Today you can drink, taste and experience Satemwa teas in specialty tea places all around the world. During the presentation he gives you some background on the history of tea in Malawi dating back till the late 1800’s. He talks you through the day to day realities of the commodity black CTC business for tea bag tea. But he also explains some challenges that made him decide to diversify from pure commodity production into specialty teas, high quality herbals & flowers, tea tourism, retail ready & private label tea packaging etc. Lastly, he shares insights about the unique terroir, endemic cultivars and specific taste of Malawian orthodox teas. He also gives some ideas how we market our teas through our own direct trade office in Europe.

Joyce Maina spoke about the importance of promotion of, and education about speciality tea - not only to consumers but also to producers. She discussed why linking of the two will provide a cohesion to empower farmers to see quality from the consumers’ eyes, understand value and profitability, penetrate new markets and thus improve livelihoods for themselves and their workers. Joyce will explore some of the tools that the speciality tea community may use to achieve these goals.

Tison is a graduate of University of California, Berkeley having studied Oriental Literature. She received the 2017 John Harney Lifetime Achievement Award for her educational contributions to the tea industry, the first woman to ever receive this prestigious award.

Elyse Petersen is the Founder of Tealet, a transparent supply chain for independent tea producers to share information and do efficient trade with the international tea market. She began her studies in tea in Hawaii and Japan and has now works with tea growers, tea producers, tea artists, and tea businesses throughout the globe. With her experience as a food scientist and Peace Corps volunteer (international development) her focus is on uplifting the sustainability and economic potential for independent tea producers through high quality tea production. She speaks on the limitations and dangers of the monoculture and commodity mindset in the face of a changing climate and pandemics such as COVID-19.
